Step 1 - In your group, you need to decide on which family member you will be. Will you be the father, mother, or the child? Print out the fact sheet on that family member.

Step 3 - Come back together as a group. Each family member needs to share his/her facts from the facts sheet. What were some new things that you learned from each other?
Step 4 - You and your group members will then work to create letters to your family members (Aunt Sarah, Uncle Tom, and Cousin David). They want to travel out west just like you. You need to write back to them sharing information about your travels out west to your new life. What important information would you want to share with them? What are some of the things that they should watch out for? In your letter you must have:
- All of the parts of a friendly letter
- At least 5 facts about pioneer life to share
- Capital letters and punctuation
- Correct spelling using word wall, dictionary, or website links
Step 5 - Finally, give your completed letters to your teacher. Your teacher will help you to make it look like your letter is from the 1800s.
